The South Central Railway (SCR) has significantly enhanced the passenger capacity of the popular Secunderabad – Visakhapatnam – Secunderabad Vande Bharat Express. Effective January 13th, 2025, the train will transition from an eight-coach configuration to a sixteen-coach configuration, nearly doubling its passenger capacity from 530 to 1128. This substantial increase is a direct response to the overwhelmingly positive public reception and consistently high ridership the train has enjoyed since its launch on March 12, 2024. The previous configuration operated consistently above its capacity, with patronage figures exceeding 145% and 159% for the respective routes, highlighting a clear and urgent need for increased capacity.
The new sixteen-coach composition comprises fourteen chair cars, providing seating for 1024 passengers, a substantial increase from the previous seven chair cars with a capacity of 478. The upgrade also includes a doubling of executive class coaches, from one to two, increasing the executive class capacity from 52 to 104. This strategic expansion ensures a broader range of travel options caters to a wider segment of passengers, accommodating both budget-conscious travelers and those seeking a more luxurious travel experience. The SCR's decision demonstrates a proactive response to passenger demand and a commitment to improving railway services in the region.
Beyond the immediate expansion of the Vande Bharat Express, the SCR has undertaken other initiatives to manage the anticipated surge in passenger traffic during the upcoming Sankranti festival. Fifteen trains have received additional coaches, augmenting overall capacity to better accommodate the expected increase in travel during this peak period. Five additional ticket counters and enquiry counters have been strategically deployed at major stations to streamline passenger processes, reducing wait times and minimizing potential bottlenecks. The SCR is also implementing rigorous crowd management strategies to ensure passenger safety and a smooth travel experience.
Round-the-clock monitoring cells have been established at divisional commercial control centers, complemented by the deployment of senior officers, including members of the Railway Protection Force (RPF), during peak hours. This coordinated approach enhances security, facilitates efficient passenger flow, and proactively addresses potential issues. Furthermore, section commercial inspectors and ticket checking staff are working collaboratively with RPF personnel at stations prone to overcrowding. Their primary role is to regulate passenger entry into general coaches, preventing overcrowding and ensuring that only authorized passengers board reserved compartments. These measures aim to maintain order, improve passenger comfort, and prevent any potential security concerns during periods of high passenger volume.
The expansion of the Secunderabad – Visakhapatnam – Secunderabad Vande Bharat Express represents a significant investment in improving railway infrastructure and addressing passenger demands in the region. The increase in capacity, coupled with proactive crowd management strategies and increased staffing, demonstrates the SCR's commitment to providing efficient and safe rail travel. The addition of extra coaches on fifteen other trains further underscores the railway's commitment to meeting the demands of peak travel seasons. The successful implementation of these initiatives will likely contribute to an improved passenger experience, reduce wait times, and enhance overall passenger satisfaction during the busy Sankranti period and beyond. The seamless integration of various safety and passenger management measures highlights a comprehensive approach to ensuring a smooth and comfortable travel experience for all passengers. This commitment to enhancing passenger comfort and safety will surely contribute to the continued success of the Vande Bharat Express service.
