The recent surge in Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) cases in China has prompted the Indian Union Health Ministry to take proactive measures to monitor the situation and ensure the country's preparedness. A Joint Monitoring Group (JMG) meeting, chaired by the Director General of Health Services (DGHS), was convened on January 4th, 2025. This meeting brought together key experts from various organizations, including the World Health Organization (WHO), the Disaster Management (DM) Cell, the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP), the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), the Emergency Medical Relief (EMR) Division, and representatives from hospitals such as AIIMS, Delhi. The collaborative nature of this meeting underscores the seriousness with which India is approaching the potential threat posed by the HMPV outbreak in China.
The official communication released following the JMG meeting emphasized that HMPV is already present globally, including in India. Reassuringly, the existing robust surveillance systems for Influenza-Like Illness (ILI) and Severe Acute Respiratory Illness (SARI) – in place through the ICMR and IDSP networks – have not detected any unusual surge in these illnesses. Furthermore, the ICMR network, which also tests for other respiratory viruses such as Adenovirus and RSV, has not observed any unusual increase in these pathogens. While the current data suggests no immediate cause for alarm, the Ministry is taking precautionary measures. The ICMR plans to increase the number of laboratories testing for HMPV and will continue to monitor trends throughout the year. Data from a recent nationwide preparedness drill indicated that India's healthcare systems and surveillance networks are well-equipped to manage any potential increase in respiratory illnesses.
Dr. Atul Goyal, a DGHS official, offered further reassurance, stating that HMPV is similar to other respiratory viruses, typically causing mild cold-like symptoms. While it can cause flu-like symptoms in very young and very old individuals, he emphasized that there is no cause for widespread alarm based on the current data analysis. He confirmed that the December 2024 data showed no substantial increase in respiratory outbreaks within India, and no large-scale cases have been reported from any institutions. This statement aligns with the findings of the JMG, suggesting a coordinated and well-informed approach to managing the potential risk.
