The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning for thunderstorms accompanied by lightning in three districts of Kerala, namely Idukki, Malappuram, and Kozhikode. These severe weather conditions are expected to occur within the next three hours. Along with the thunderstorms, strong winds with speeds reaching up to 40 kmph are anticipated in these areas.
In addition to the immediate threat of thunderstorms, a yellow alert has been declared for eight districts in Kerala: Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, and Thrissur. This alert signifies the potential for heavy rainfall in these regions. Furthermore, a yellow alert has also been issued for Ernakulam, Kozhikode, and Wayanad districts for the following day. The IMD has predicted isolated heavy rainfall throughout the period, with a possibility of rain accompanied by lightning at isolated places in Kerala until November 17.
Despite the expected weather disturbances, the Meteorological Department has clarified that fishing operations along the coasts of Kerala, Karnataka, and Lakshadweep will not be affected. However, strong winds with speeds ranging from 35-45 kmph, gusting to 55 kmph, are anticipated along and off the south Tamil Nadu coast, Gulf of Mannar, and adjoining Kanyakumari areas.
