A tragic accident in Dehradun claimed the lives of six young individuals on Monday night. The incident involved a speeding multi-utility vehicle (MUV) that collided with a container truck, leaving only one survivor in critical condition. The deceased, identified as Guneet Singh, Kamakshi Singhal, Navya Goyal, Rishabh Jain, Atul Agrawal, and Kunal Kukreja, were all returning from a party hosted by the sole survivor, Siddhesh Agrawal. The investigation, led by Inspector KC Bhatt from the Cantt police station, suggests that the MUV, likely new and without license plates, was traveling at excessive speed. The vehicle was reportedly overtaking another car at high speed when the driver misjudged the timing and attempted to pass the truck before it crossed the intersection.
CCTV footage obtained from the scene reveals the MUV accelerating sharply just before the crash near the ONGC intersection. The impact was so severe that it tore off the MUV's roof, resulting in the decapitation of two passengers. The force of the collision left the MUV mangled and twisted beyond recognition. Initial investigations indicate that the truck driver was not at fault as the MUV collided with the truck's left rear side, a known blind spot on large vehicles. The truck was moving at a steady pace, covering 1.5 kilometers in six minutes, when the MUV struck it from behind.
Eyewitness accounts from a nearby restaurant owner shed further light on the incident. He recounted narrowly avoiding a collision with the speeding MUV around 1am near Pacific Mall. Alarmed by the recklessness, he alerted police at a nearby checkpoint but observed no action was taken. He later reported the incident through the emergency helpline and contacted officials, including the SSP and CM's office. Unfortunately, the same vehicle was involved in the fatal accident later that morning. The police are investigating the incident and are looking into legal alternatives as no charges can be filed posthumously against the deceased driver. The tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of speeding and the importance of responsible driving practices.
