The Karnataka Chief Minister, Siddaramaiah, was questioned by the Lokayukta police for nearly two hours in Mysuru on November 6, 2023, regarding allegations of irregularities in the allotment of compensatory sites to his wife, Parvathi, by the Mysuru Urban Development Authority (MUDA). The investigation stems from accusations that the allotment of 14 sites to Parvathi was illegal and benefited the Chief Minister.
Siddaramaiah arrived at the Superintendent of Lokayukta police office in Mysuru, accompanied by his legal advisor, Virajpet MLA A. S. Ponnanna. Despite a large police presence and barricades surrounding the office, he faced protests by BJP members who demanded his resignation and a CBI inquiry into the allegations. Siddaramaiah, however, maintained that the land allotment was legal and within the framework of the law, emphasizing that the 14 sites were given in exchange for 3 acres and 16 guntas of land in Kesare, Mysuru, which was used by the MUDA for development purposes. The Chief Minister attributed the allegations to the BJP and JD(S), dismissing them as false.
Despite claiming the allotment was legal, Siddaramaiah's wife returned the 14 sites to the MUDA. In response to inquiries about this seemingly contradictory action, the Chief Minister explained that the return was a decision made by his wife in light of the false allegations being made against him. Siddaramaiah firmly rejected the demand for a CBI probe, pointing out that the Lokayukta police, an independent agency in Karnataka, is investigating the case, following Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot's order. He questioned the BJP's stance on the matter, suggesting that their opposition to the Lokayukta investigation might indicate the falsity of the allegations. After the inquiry, the Chief Minister proceeded to Channapatna for election campaign activities.
The investigation surrounding the land allotment allegations is likely to continue. The Lokayukta police are expected to analyze the evidence gathered and determine the legitimacy of the allegations. This case highlights the political tension in Karnataka, with the BJP using these allegations as a tool to criticize the ruling Congress government. The outcome of the investigation could have significant consequences for Siddaramaiah and his political future.
