Mohammed Shami, the Indian fast bowler, made his long-awaited return to competitive cricket in the Ranji Trophy, representing Bengal against Madhya Pradesh at the Holkar Stadium in Indore. Despite the excitement surrounding his comeback after a lengthy injury layoff, Shami's first day back on the field did not yield the desired impact. Bengal was sent in to bat first by Madhya Pradesh and was bowled out for 228 runs, with Shahbaz Ahmed's 92 off 80 balls being the standout performance. Shami, himself, faced one over at the crease and was dismissed for a mere two runs.
When it was time for him to bowl, Shami delivered the most overs for his team, but failed to make a breakthrough in his ten overs. He conceded 34 runs with one maiden, highlighting his lack of sharpness and rhythm after his extended absence from the sport. The injury, a sustained ankle injury during the final match of the 2023 ODI World Cup, required surgery and a lengthy rehabilitation process for the 33-year-old fast bowler. Shami, after his surgery, diligently pursued his recovery at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru, determined to regain his form and fitness.
On the eve of his return, Shami shared his excitement on social media, expressing gratitude to his fans for their unwavering support and motivation during his recovery. He wrote, “360 days is a long, long time!! All set for the Ranji Trophy. Now back on the domestic stage with the same passion and energy. Huge thanks to all my fans for your endless love, support, and motivation – let’s make this season memorable!” While his return was met with anticipation and enthusiasm, Shami's initial performance was not indicative of the prowess he is known for. However, with further matches in the Ranji Trophy, there is hope that Shami will regain his rhythm and sharpness, delivering the impactful performances that have become synonymous with his name. At the end of day one, Madhya Pradesh trailed Bengal by 103 runs, having scored 103 runs for the loss of one wicket, which was taken by Mohammed Kaif, Shami's brother.
