In the midst of the upcoming Jharkhand assembly elections, Union Home Minister Amit Shah has taken a strong stance against the Congress, labeling it an “anti-reservation” party. During a poll rally in Dhanbad, Shah explicitly stated that the BJP would not allow reservations for Muslims in the state, declaring that they are committed to safeguarding reservations for backward classes and Dalits. This statement highlights the BJP's strategy of appealing to the Hindutva sentiment and using the issue of reservations to consolidate their base in the state, especially among the non-Muslim backward classes and Dalits.
Shah further criticized the ruling Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM)-Congress coalition, accusing them of widespread corruption and citing recent seizures as evidence. He highlighted the seizure of Rs 35 crore from JMM minister Alamgir Alam’s residence and Rs 350 crore from a Congress MP’s house, suggesting financial crimes within the local government. These allegations have been a central theme in the BJP’s campaign, painting the current administration as “scam-ridden” and promising a clean and efficient government if they come to power. Shah also accused the coalition of corruption in land deals, mining, and MGNREGA schemes, reiterating their commitment to rooting out corruption.
Beyond addressing concerns about reservations and corruption, Shah also highlighted the BJP’s focus on tackling illegal immigration and promoting a uniform civil code (UCC). He claimed that infiltrators are taking jobs and land, targeting tribal women, and draining local resources. He further accused the Karnataka Waqf Board of encroaching on land belonging to temples, villagers, and farmers, calling for amendments to the Waqf Act. These statements reflect the BJP’s emphasis on issues related to identity and national security, playing on the fear of cultural dilution and economic displacement among certain sections of the population. Shah’s assertion that the BJP will implement the UCC in Jharkhand, excluding tribals, demonstrates their attempt to create a narrative of a strong and decisive leadership that can protect the nation’s identity and interests.
Shah’s pronouncements regarding reservations, corruption, illegal immigration, and the UCC are likely to have significant implications for the Jharkhand assembly elections.
