The political landscape of Himachal Pradesh is currently experiencing a heated debate stemming from a seemingly trivial incident involving samosas. This incident, which occurred on October 21, 2024, has sparked a major controversy and led to the initiation of a CID probe, further deepening the divide between the ruling Congress party and the opposition BJP.
The controversy arose when samosas and cake meant for Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, during his visit to the CID headquarters, were mistakenly served to his security staff. This seemingly innocuous error, however, has been interpreted by the BJP as a blatant example of the Congress government's incompetence and misplaced priorities.
Former State BJP chief Satpal Satti has accused the Congress government of becoming a “laughing stock” by ordering an “inquiry into samosas.” He argues that the police should be focusing on more serious scandals instead of wasting their time on such trivial matters. The BJP's aggressive stance on this matter is clearly aimed at capitalizing on the perceived weakness of the Congress government and discrediting its ability to govern effectively.
However, the Congress government has vehemently denied ordering any inquiry into the samosa incident, attributing it to an internal matter within the CID. Naresh Chauhan, media advisor to the Chief Minister, has refuted the BJP's accusations, suggesting that the incident is being politicized and that there is a conspiracy to portray the government in a bad light. The Congress's response is focused on deflecting the blame and highlighting the BJP’s attempts to exploit the situation for political gain.
The CID Director General, Ranjhan Ojha, further clarified the situation, stating that the incident was simply an internal matter and that there was no intention of taking any action against anyone. The CID's statement suggests that the investigation was initiated to address the error and ensure that such incidents are not repeated in the future.
Despite the CID’s explanation, the BJP remains steadfast in its criticism, utilizing the incident as an opportunity to attack the Congress government and paint it as inefficient and incapable. The “samosa politics,” as it has come to be known, has become a symbolic representation of the larger political conflict in Himachal Pradesh, highlighting the deep-seated animosity between the two parties.
