Rijiju Slams Opposition Silence on Temple Attack
  • Rijiju criticizes opposition's silence
  • Hindu temple attack condemned by Modi
  • India-Canada relations strained over attack

The recent attack on a Hindu temple in Brampton, Canada, by alleged Khalistani extremists has further escalated tensions between India and Canada. The incident has sparked widespread condemnation, particularly from Indian leaders who have criticized the opposition's silence on the matter.

Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju took to X (formerly Twitter) to express his disappointment at the lack of condemnation from opposition leaders. He questioned their silence, emphasizing the need for unity in the face of such an attack. Rijiju's remarks highlight the political ramifications of the incident, particularly within India, where religious sentiments and national security are intertwined.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a strong statement, condemned the attack and criticized the Canadian government for its alleged attempts to intimidate Indian diplomats. He demanded justice and the upholding of the rule of law in Canada. Modi's stance reflects the growing frustration in India regarding Canada's handling of Khalistani extremism and its perceived failure to address the concerns of the Indian government.

The attack on the Hindu temple has exacerbated the already strained relations between India and Canada. The two countries have been at odds since September 2022 when Prime Minister Justin Trudeau alleged the involvement of Indian agents in the killing of Khalistani extremist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. India vehemently rejected these allegations as “absurd” and “motivated.”

India maintains that the primary issue at the heart of the diplomatic rift is Canada's permissive attitude towards pro-Khalistan elements operating from Canadian soil. The recent attack underscores the gravity of this issue and the need for decisive action from the Canadian government to address the concerns of the Indian government and ensure the safety and security of Indian citizens and institutions abroad.
