On Sunday, India's domestic air travel reached an unprecedented milestone, exceeding five lakh passengers for the first time in history. This surge in air travel can be attributed to a confluence of factors, primarily the low fares offered by airlines, the influx of travelers during a long weekend, and the peak of the wedding season. The sheer volume of passengers – 505,412 to be precise, transported across 3,173 flights – underscores the significant increase in demand. The high seat occupancy rate, exceeding 90 percent, further emphasizes the remarkable popularity of air travel during this period. This phenomenal growth is particularly noteworthy given the relatively subdued demand observed during the Diwali festival, a period that typically witnesses a considerable uptick in travel. The airlines' response to this initially lower-than-expected demand involved strategic fare reductions, a tactic that clearly proved highly effective in stimulating subsequent travel demand. The period following Diwali saw a dramatic rebound in passenger numbers, with daily traffic consistently hovering around the 4.9 lakh mark, setting the stage for Sunday's record-breaking achievement.
The wedding season played a pivotal role in propelling this unprecedented growth. Aloke Bajpai, Group chief Executive Officer of Ixigo, a prominent online travel agency, highlighted the synergistic effect of the exceptionally strong wedding season and the lower advance fares offered a few weeks prior to the November travel period. This combination proved to be a powerful catalyst, significantly boosting air passenger demand. This sentiment is echoed by Gaurav Patwari, Vice President (Air) at Cleartrip, another major online travel platform, who anticipates that this robust demand will persist throughout the winter months. The increase in the number of flights also contributed significantly to this passenger growth. Domestic carriers currently operate approximately 3,150 to 3,180 flights daily, representing a substantial increase of 150 to 180 flights compared to last November, according to an airline executive. This capacity expansion directly addresses the increased demand and ensures that airlines can effectively meet the needs of the traveling public.
Several airlines played a key role in this expansion. IndiGo, India's largest airline, initiated new flights connecting Pune and Bhopal and increased frequencies on several other key routes, including Mumbai-Jaipur and Delhi-Ahmedabad. This proactive approach to capacity management reflects IndiGo’s recognition of and response to the surging demand. SpiceJet, another major player, contributed to the overall growth by restoring some of the flights previously canceled due to financial constraints. The restoration of these flights adds significantly to the overall capacity, further supporting the robust passenger numbers. IndiGo’s Senior Vice President (Network Planning & Revenue Management), Abhijit DasGupta, attributes the record traffic to the general pick-up in the travel season during the festive period. However, he also acknowledges the inherent seasonality of travel demand, suggesting that fluctuations are to be expected, with a structural growth trajectory generally expected to mirror capacity growth.
