A tragic incident unfolded at the Barauni Railway Station in Bihar's Begusarai, claiming the life of a railway employee who was crushed between an engine and a bogie. The victim, identified as Amar Rawat, was responsible for uncoupling the engine from the bogie of the 5204 Barauni-Lucknow Express. The accident occurred on platform five when the engine unexpectedly moved backwards without any signal, trapping Rawat between the engine and the bogie.
The unfortunate incident has highlighted serious concerns regarding safety protocols and staffing levels at the railway station. Shivprasad Yadav, the Divisional President of Sonpur, emphasized that four workers are typically required for the safe handling of engine-bogie couplings. However, due to understaffing, only one or two staff members are often tasked with the job, potentially contributing to the accident. The victim's brother, Shekhar Kumar, echoed these concerns, highlighting the high-risk environment for workers despite known safety requirements.
Rescue personnel arrived at the scene and worked for nearly two hours to retrieve Rawat's body. The driver of the engine fled the scene immediately after the accident, further intensifying frustration and anger among other railway employees. Adding to the tragedy, Rawat was set to be married on December 11. Following the accident, railway officials, including Sonpur Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) Vivek Bhushan Sood, visited the site and assured assistance to the victim's family.
Sood acknowledged the gravity of the situation and vowed to implement disciplinary measures to prevent similar accidents in the future. He also announced the formation of a special team to investigate the incident, determine the failures in protocols, and propose necessary corrective actions. A high-level meeting was scheduled to discuss safety improvements and prevent future occurrences of such incidents.
