Rahul Gandhi, the leader of the Indian National Congress, has escalated his criticism of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accusing him of undermining the very foundation of India's democracy – the Constitution. During a rally in Bermo, Jharkhand, Gandhi presented a copy of the Constitution, refuting accusations that he had displayed a “false” version. He emphasized the significance of the document's contents, declaring that 'the Constitution is the soul of the country.' This statement directly challenges Modi's previous remarks, suggesting that the Constitution lacks substance. Gandhi's use of the Constitution as a visual prop underlines the political stakes of the upcoming Jharkhand elections, where the Congress aims to regain a foothold.
Gandhi went further, accusing Modi of prioritizing the interests of billionaires over the welfare of the poor. He cited the government's decision to waive off Rs 16 lakh crore of industrial loans and the ongoing privatization of essential infrastructure as evidence of this alleged bias. He argued that while the government prioritizes the needs of industrialists, the plight of farmers, Dalits, and the poor remains largely ignored. This critique aligns with the Congress's broader campaign strategy, which emphasizes the party's commitment to social justice and economic equality.
To counter the BJP's policies, Gandhi outlined the Congress's vision for Jharkhand, promising the implementation of a caste census and the removal of the 50% cap on reservations. He also pledged to increase reservation quotas for Scheduled Tribes (ST) from 26% to 28%, Scheduled Castes (SC) from 10% to 12%, and Other Backward Classes (OBC) from 14% to 27%. These promises aim to attract the support of marginalized communities, who are significant vote banks in Jharkhand. By emphasizing its commitment to inclusivity and representation, the Congress seeks to differentiate itself from the BJP, which is perceived by some as favoring certain sections of society.
