The Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) Air Force, Navy, and Army, along with the Aviation Industry Corporation of China, came together for an unprecedented joint press conference in Zhuhai, Guangdong Province on November 13, 2024. This marked the first time all three branches of the PLA held a joint press conference at the renowned China International Aviation and Aerospace Exhibition (Airshow China). The primary focus of the press conference was to highlight the key aspects of the 15th edition of Airshow China.
One of the most significant events at the airshow was the public debut of the J-35A fighter jet, signifying the completion of the PLA Air Force's lineup of four main combat fighters. Air Force spokesperson Xie Peng confirmed this development on Wednesday. The J-35A joins the ranks of the J-10C, J-16, and J-20, collectively forming a formidable force in the PLA Air Force's arsenal.
Airshow China commenced on Tuesday with a spectacular opening ceremony that showcased an unprecedented display of aerial prowess. Three types of stealth fighter jets took to the skies, including the debut of the J-35A, a formation of J-20s, and the first appearance of Russia's Su-57 in China. The event also introduced a new dynamic demonstration format that seamlessly integrated air, sea, and ground operations, showcasing the PLA's capabilities across multiple domains.
The PLA Air Force utilized the platform to unveil the J-35A and showcase star aircraft such as the J-20 and Y-20. The PLA Navy displayed its equipment in the static area, featuring the Y-8 anti-submarine patrol aircraft and the Z-9F shipborne anti-submarine helicopter. The J-15D and J-15T fighters participated in aerobatic displays during the airshow.
Adding to the diverse display of military capabilities, the Navy Marine Corps made an appearance at the airshow. Their demonstration included air assault operations utilizing the Z-20J carrier-based helicopter and Z-8C transport helicopter, as reported by Xinhua. The PLA Army showcased its helicopter capabilities, featuring the Z-10, Z-20, and Z-8 models.
Lieutenant Colonel Li Lanxing from an air force training base shared insightful observations about the J-35A. Test pilots highlighted the aircraft's exceptional agility and stability, coupled with outstanding operational performance. The J-35A combines flexibility, maneuverability, and a high level of comfort, making it an impressive addition to the PLA's arsenal. Pilots reported that upon entering the cockpit, they feel confident in its user-friendly design, which facilitates seamless integration between pilot and aircraft, ultimately enhancing combat effectiveness.
