The upcoming Maharashtra assembly elections are heating up, with accusations and counter-accusations flying between the ruling BJP-led Mahayuti government and the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA). One of the most prominent figures in this political battle is Jitendra Awhad, a leader of the Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar). Awhad has made bold claims, predicting that a victory for the MVA would lead to the withdrawal of support for the BJP-led central government by key allies, including Nitish Kumar of the Janata Dal (United) and N Chandrababu Naidu of the Telugu Desam Party. This assertion adds another layer of complexity to the already highly charged political climate in Maharashtra.
Awhad's criticisms are not limited to the BJP. He has also launched a scathing attack on Ajit Pawar, the Deputy Chief Minister and a key figure in the recent split within the NCP. Awhad accuses Ajit Pawar of leading a “pocketmaar (pickpocket) gang” that has stolen the NCP name and symbol. He further claims that Ajit Pawar has abandoned the principles of the NCP and is aligning with the BJP's agenda. This attack has been met with sharp rebukes from other NCP leaders, including Chhagan Bhujbal and Anand Paranjape, who defend Ajit Pawar's actions and criticize Awhad's statements.
Awhad's campaign rhetoric is characterized by a strong critique of the BJP-led government in Maharashtra, highlighting the perceived weaknesses and shortcomings of the incumbent administration. He accuses the government of failing to manage the state's finances effectively, resulting in difficulties even in meeting basic expenses such as police salaries. Moreover, he criticizes the government's response to communal violence and points to incidents where the Chief Minister, Eknath Shinde, has shared a platform with controversial religious leaders. Awhad's aggressive campaign strategy aims to capitalize on the existing anxieties and concerns within the electorate, using them as leverage to garner support for the MVA in the upcoming elections.
