Modi Slams Congress for Unrealistic Promises
  • PM Modi criticizes Congress's poll promises.
  • Kharge advises party to focus on feasibility.
  • Modi highlights Congress-ruled states' decline.

The recent political landscape in India has witnessed a heated exchange between the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the opposition Congress party, centered around the issue of election promises and governance. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has launched a scathing attack on Congress, accusing the party of making unrealistic promises that are difficult to implement. This comes after Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge advised his party's state units to focus on making promises that are 'fiscally doable'.

The controversy erupted after Deputy Chief Minister of Karnataka, D.K. Shivakumar, suggested a review of one of the key guarantees promised by the Congress government in the state. This triggered a public rebuke from Kharge, who reminded the party that they had made similar promises in Maharashtra. PM Modi seized this opportunity to highlight the Congress's perceived inconsistency in fulfilling its promises. In a series of posts on X (formerly Twitter), Modi pointed out that the Congress has a history of making promises that are not followed through.

He further argued that the Congress-led governments in states like Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka, and Telangana are struggling to maintain their fiscal health and are failing to achieve significant developmental progress. Modi claimed that the Congress's 'Guarantees' remain unfulfilled, leading to a betrayal of the people, particularly the poor, young, farmers, and women. He accused the party of diluting existing schemes and urged the public to remain vigilant against what he called a 'culture of fake promises'.

Modi's comments highlight a key battleground in Indian politics - the credibility and efficacy of election promises. While the Congress has traditionally relied on populist guarantees to attract voters, the BJP has positioned itself as a party that prioritizes fiscal responsibility and practical governance. The ongoing debate will undoubtedly shape the political narrative leading up to the next general elections, with both parties vying for the support of the Indian electorate.
