Modi Attacks Congress for Broken Promises
  • PM Modi criticizes Congress for unfulfilled promises.
  • He cites Karnataka, Himachal, Telangana as examples.
  • Congress urged fiscal responsibility by Kharge.

The political landscape in India continues to heat up with Prime Minister Narendra Modi launching a scathing attack on the Congress party for its failure to deliver on its promises. Modi specifically highlighted the states of Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka, and Telangana, all governed by the Congress, as evidence of a deteriorating developmental trajectory and fiscal health. He asserted that while the Congress readily makes promises during campaigns, their implementation often falls short, leaving the people disillusioned and deprived of the benefits they were promised. The Prime Minister accused the Congress of resorting to 'terrible deceit' by making promises they knew they couldn't fulfill.

The criticism stemmed from the Congress's recent actions in Karnataka, where their initial promise of a free travel scheme for women came under scrutiny. The Deputy Chief Minister, DK Shivakumar, sparked controversy by suggesting a review of the scheme, prompting a reprimand from the party's central leadership. The situation was further complicated by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah's promise of similar schemes in Maharashtra, where elections are due soon. The Congress, according to Modi, is more preoccupied with internal party politics and 'loot' than fulfilling its development commitments.

The Congress, however, seems to be taking note of the potential pitfalls of making unrealistic promises. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge recently advised party units preparing for elections to announce guarantees based on their budget. He cautioned against an unplanned approach, warning that it could lead to financial difficulties and negatively impact future generations. Kharge emphasized the importance of fiscal responsibility, suggesting that failure to deliver on commitments could damage the government's reputation and burden the community. These pronouncements suggest that the Congress may be shifting towards a more measured approach, recognizing the need for financial prudence in their election promises.
