The city of Lahore, Pakistan, is grappling with a severe air pollution crisis, reaching alarming levels that have made it the world's most polluted city. With an Air Quality Index (AQI) soaring to nearly 1600, the air quality poses significant health risks to residents. The hazardous air quality, a pressing issue across South Asia, particularly in northern India and Pakistan, has triggered emergency measures in the region.
The situation in Lahore is dire. On Friday morning, the CERP Office area reported an AQI of 1587, a level considered extremely hazardous. An AQI of 1600 poses a serious threat to everyone, even those in good health, and significantly increases the risk of respiratory issues. The average AQI for Lahore on Thursday stood at 1300, highlighting the worsening situation throughout November. Despite government efforts to address the rising pollution, the AQI continues to increase daily.
The hazardous air quality has taken a severe toll on public health. Over 15,000 cases of respiratory and viral infections were reported within a 24-hour period. Hospitals are overwhelmed with patients suffering from conditions aggravated by air pollution. Visibility has diminished due to thick smog, adding to the woes. The health crisis has led to a surge in people seeking treatment, with over 70,000 individuals visiting clinics daily across Pakistan for smog-related issues.
In response to the alarming situation, the local government in Lahore has implemented several drastic measures. Schools, parks, and museums have been closed until the end of the week, and offices are operating at reduced capacity. Authorities have mandated the use of face masks in public spaces and are considering further restrictions if the air quality does not improve. The Pakistani government has announced a temporary ban on weddings for the next three months, aiming to reduce outdoor celebrations and associated pollution.
Additionally, the transport department has issued new guidelines to curb emissions from vehicles, and the Punjab provincial government has closed schools and colleges. The air pollution crisis in Lahore and other Pakistani cities is attributed to a combination of factors, including high emissions from vehicles, industrial activities, and construction work. The problem worsens in winter due to crop burning, especially from wheat planting, releasing vast amounts of particulate matter into the air. This yearly cycle of pollution and smog has become a significant environmental issue for Pakistan, with the winter months seeing a sharp rise in airborne toxins. The dense smog blanket drastically reduces visibility, worsens air quality, and increases health risks and environmental degradation.
