  • Kharge refutes Modi's claim that Congress opposes reservation system.

The recent statement by Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, revealing the involvement of industrialist Gautam Adani in high-level political talks between the BJP and NCP in 2019, has sparked a renewed debate regarding the alleged close ties between the Adani Group and the ruling BJP. AICC president and Leader of the Opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge seized upon this revelation, declaring it as a validation of the Congress party's long-standing stance on the nexus between Adani and the BJP.

Kharge asserted that the Congress had long been opposed to Adani's involvement in politics, citing his alleged exploitation of the country's resources while simultaneously supporting the BJP, a party whose ideology he deems incompatible with the principles of India. He criticized the BJP for accepting funds from crony capitalists like Adani, using these funds for election campaigns and favoring them after assuming power. This practice, according to Kharge, has been consistently opposed by the Congress.

Shifting focus to the growing economic disparity in India, Kharge accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah of favoring the wealthy at the expense of the poor. He cited statistics highlighting the concentration of wealth in the hands of the top 5% of the population while the poorest 50% remain marginalized. Kharge argued that the BJP's policies prioritize the interests of a select few industrialists at the expense of the majority, neglecting medium and small businesses and the general welfare of the population.

In response to Modi's accusations of the Congress opposing reservation systems, Kharge countered by pointing out that Modi's ideology is rooted in a history of opposing the Indian Constitution, which guarantees reservations for oppressed communities. He recalled an incident where the Constitution was burned at Ramlila Maidan in Delhi by those advocating for the principles of Manusmriti, a text that contradicts the ideals of equality and inclusion enshrined in the Constitution. Kharge emphasized that the Congress, as a party that firmly believes in the Constitution, stands firmly behind the right to reservation, a fundamental right guaranteed by the Constitution itself.
