The political landscape of Jammu and Kashmir continues to be fraught with tension and disagreement, as evidenced by the latest development in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly. Following the passage of a resolution by the Omar Abdullah-led government seeking dialogue for the restoration of the region's special status, a group of five opposition MLAs submitted a separate resolution, vehemently rejecting the decisions made on August 5, 2019.
This new resolution, dubbed the 'People's Resolution', was put forward by Sajad Lone of the People's Conference, Waheed Para and Fayaz Mir of the Peoples Democratic Party, and Independent MLAs Sheikh Khursheed Ahmad and Shabir Ahmad Kullay. Their resolution explicitly condemned the abrogation of Articles 370 and 35A, as well as the enactment of the Jammu & Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019, calling these actions unconstitutional and detrimental to the region's identity and autonomy.
The opposition MLAs, notably, took a sharp stance against the ruling National Conference (NC), accusing them of having an understanding with the Centre and betraying the people of Jammu and Kashmir. They criticized the NC's resolution, which they deemed weak and inadequate, alleging that it amounted to a 'humiliation' and 'betrayal' of the people's sentiments. They pointed out that the NC had prioritized statehood in their resolution, overlooking the paramount issue of restoring the special status as per the will of the people.
The five MLAs asserted that they would be willing to support a resolution from the NC that mirrored their own or even accept their own resolution if the NC supported it. This indicates a desire to unite the opposition against the current situation and create a stronger platform for demanding the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir's special status. They also urged the people to endorse their resolution through social media, signifying an attempt to garner public support and build momentum for their cause.
The submission of this 'People's Resolution' highlights the deep divisions within the Jammu and Kashmir political landscape. It underscores the ongoing debate surrounding the region's special status and the dissatisfaction with the NC's perceived approach. With both the BJP and NC engaging in heated exchanges and interrupting the assembly proceedings, the situation reflects the deeply entrenched political polarization and the complexities surrounding the future of Jammu and Kashmir.
