J&K Assembly Ruckus: BJP Protests Over Article 370
  • BJP MLAs disrupted J&K Assembly
  • Protests over Article 370 resolution
  • Speaker marshalled out 12 MLAs

The Jammu and Kashmir Assembly witnessed another day of chaos on Friday, November 8, 2024, as BJP members continued their protests over the special status resolution. The escalating situation led to the forceful removal of 12 opposition MLAs from the assembly, highlighting the deep political divide surrounding the controversial issue of Article 370.

The protests erupted as soon as the Assembly convened for the day. BJP MLAs, chanting slogans like ‘Pakistani agenda nahi chalega’, expressed their strong opposition to the resolution. Their anger boiled over as they stormed the well of the house, forcing the Speaker, Abdul Rahim Rather, to take action. To quell the disruption, the Speaker ordered the removal of the protesting BJP MLAs, marking the third consecutive day of disturbances in the Assembly.

Adding fuel to the fire, 11 more BJP MLAs, in a show of solidarity, walked out of the Assembly in protest. These actions underscore the BJP's unwavering stance against the resolution, which seeks the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir's special status and constitutional guarantees, including Article 370. This resolution, introduced by Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary on November 5, 2024, expressed concern over the unilateral removal of the special status and aimed to initiate dialogue between the Centre and elected representatives from the region for its restoration.

The resolution emphasizes the importance of the special status in safeguarding the identity, culture, and rights of the people of Jammu and Kashmir. While advocating for the restoration of these guarantees, the resolution also stresses the need to safeguard national unity in the process. The ongoing protests and disruptions in the Assembly clearly illustrate the complex and deeply entrenched political landscape surrounding the future of Article 370 and the special status of Jammu and Kashmir. The path to resolution remains uncertain, with both sides holding firm to their positions, leaving the Assembly's future and the future of Jammu and Kashmir in a state of political impasse.
