The Indian cricket team has firmly stated its refusal to travel to Pakistan for the 2025 Champions Trophy, opting instead to play its matches at a neutral venue. This decision, conveyed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and other stakeholders, has set in motion a series of adjustments to the tournament's schedule. Dubai has emerged as the leading candidate to host the fixtures involving the Indian team.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) had initially planned for India's Champions Trophy matches to take place in Lahore, Pakistan. However, the BCCI's concerns regarding security and logistical challenges have prompted a shift towards a neutral location. Dubai, with its established infrastructure and experience in hosting major sporting events, appears to be the most suitable alternative. Notably, Dubai has already successfully hosted numerous high-profile tournaments, including the recent Women's T20 World Cup, which was moved from Bangladesh due to political unrest.
The ICC's original schedule, slated for release on Monday, will now require revisions to accommodate India's decision. The tournament is scheduled to begin on February 19, 2025, with the final slated for March 9. While the PCB had initiated an upgradation drive for its venues in preparation for the 50-over tournament, the relocation of India's matches will necessitate a reassessment of logistics and arrangements. The swiftness with which the ICC adapts to these changes will determine the timeline for the revised schedule release.
