India-China Border Disengagement Done, De-escalation Next
  • India and China conclude disengagement
  • Focus shifts to de-escalation along LAC
  • Jaishankar highlights bilateral challenges

India and China have successfully concluded the disengagement process along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh, according to External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar. This significant development marks the end of a recent phase of troop withdrawal from contested border zones near Depsang and Demchok. However, while disengagement has been achieved, the focus now shifts to de-escalation, which involves a substantial reduction in troop presence along the LAC.

Jaishankar highlighted that the final disengagement steps, negotiated on October 21, addressed the separation of troops in the contentious areas of Depsang and Demchok. He emphasized that the disengagement chapter has been completed, and the next step is to achieve de-escalation, which involves reducing the build-up of forces along the LAC. The disengagement process, initiated after the summer of 2020 when Chinese and Indian troops were deployed in close proximity, aimed to alleviate tensions and prevent potential incidents.

Acknowledging the complexity of maintaining an equilibrium between the two populous nations, Jaishankar pointed out the challenges of establishing a balanced situation at the border while also fostering a working relationship on other issues. He highlighted the need for strategic thinking and management to navigate the complex dynamics of the bilateral relationship, given the countries' rising influence and activities.

Jaishankar's remarks come after the completion of disengagement at major friction points in Demchok and the Depsang Plains. The progress made along the LAC is viewed as a positive step towards improving India-China relations. However, the focus now shifts to de-escalation, which will require further negotiations and cooperation between the two countries. The success of de-escalation will be crucial in establishing a more stable and predictable environment along the LAC.
