The recent meeting between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Kazan has sparked renewed optimism for the revival of India-China bilateral relations, which have been strained since the border conflicts along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in 2020. Chinese officials, emphasizing the positive "chemistry" between the two leaders, have expressed confidence in the success of proposals currently under discussion to normalize ties.
To mend the fractured relationship, China has put forward a series of measures, including the resumption of direct flights, easing visa restrictions for Chinese nationals and diplomats, allowing Chinese journalists to work in India, lifting the ban on mobile applications, and promoting cultural exchanges such as the release of more Indian films in Chinese cinemas. These proposals were shared with an Indian media delegation, marking a significant interaction since the LAC disengagement.
Beijing anticipates Prime Minister Modi's visit to China for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit. Officials have highlighted the role of "personal friendship" between Modi and Xi in initiating an "ice-breaking" encounter, moving beyond pre-prepared talking points. This suggests a commitment from both sides to resolve their differences and explore future collaboration.
The leaders have tasked their respective foreign ministers, deputy foreign ministers, and special representatives to engage in strategic discussions. Further dialogue is planned on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Brazil in November. China has indicated its willingness to discuss issues beyond border concerns, encompassing areas like artificial intelligence, climate change, and green energy transitions, emphasizing that "the ball is in India's court."
Officials have acknowledged the importance of addressing the border issue but stressed that it should not overshadow the broader bilateral partnership. With a major political shift under US President-elect Donald Trump on the horizon, both India and China may find common ground in tackling shared challenges. The officials emphasize the importance of consistent dialogue and the avoidance of external pressures as key to future progress.
