Heavy Rain Lashes Thoothukudi District in Tamil Nadu
  • Thoothukudi district experienced heavy rain.
  • Northeast monsoon intensified across Tamil Nadu.
  • Gale of 35-45 kmph forecast for coast.

The district of Thoothukudi in Tamil Nadu experienced a significant rainfall event on Friday, with continuous showers throughout the morning and heavy downpours in the evening. The relentless precipitation led to flooding in several low-lying areas within and around the district.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) attributed the heavy rainfall to the intensification of the northeast monsoon across Tamil Nadu. A cyclonic circulation, positioned at an altitude of 1.5 kilometers above sea level over the Gulf of Mannar and adjacent Sri Lankan coastal regions, is expected to bring a period of wet weather characterized by heavy rainfall in several districts, including Thoothukudi, Kanniyakumari, Tirunelveli, Tenkasi, and Ramanathapuram.

The IMD has also issued a forecast for strong gale force winds, ranging from 35 to 45 kilometers per hour, along the coastal areas of southern Tamil Nadu. This potent weather system is likely to bring significant rainfall to the region in the coming days, posing challenges to residents and authorities alike.

Rainfall figures recorded over the 24 hours ending at 6 a.m. on Friday provide a stark illustration of the heavy precipitation experienced in various parts of the region. Tiruchendur received 60 millimeters of rain, Srivaikuntam recorded 5 millimeters, Kayalpattinam witnessed 30 millimeters, Thoothukudi received 3 millimeters, Kulasekarapattinam experienced 50 millimeters, Kazhugumalai recorded 21 millimeters, and Kayathar saw 23 millimeters of rainfall.
