A goods train carrying steel coils and iron rods derailed in the early hours of Wednesday morning, causing significant disruptions to rail services in Telangana. The incident occurred between Raghavapuram and Ramagundam in Peddapalli district, affecting the busy Kazipet-Balharshah section of the South Central Railway (SCR). According to officials, 12 wagons of the train derailed around 10 pm on Tuesday, blocking all three tracks. The derailment has led to the cancellation of 39 passenger trains, while 61 trains have been diverted and seven partially cancelled.
The derailed train was travelling from Bellary in Karnataka to Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh. The blockage of one of the SCR's main triple-line sections prompted SCR General Manager Arun Kumar Jain and other senior officials to oversee restoration work on-site. SCR's Chief Public Relations Officer A Sridhar said that a temporary road is being constructed to facilitate the use of large cranes for removing the derailed wagons. He also confirmed that no injuries were reported during the incident. The SCR anticipates one track to reopen by Wednesday evening, with full traffic expected to resume on Thursday.
Union Minister of State for Home Bandi Sanjay Kumar, who is currently campaigning in Maharashtra, was informed about the incident and urged the SCR to expedite the restoration process. The derailment has resulted in significant disruptions to long-distance trains, including the Dakshin Express, which has been rerouted, skipping stops between Balharshah and Kazipet. Trains operating within the SCR zone, including routes to Karimnagar, Nanded, and Tirupati, have been cancelled. The SCR has issued helpline numbers at key stations, including Secunderabad, Kazipet, Warangal, and Khammam, to provide assistance to affected passengers.
The derailment has highlighted the vulnerability of the Indian railway system to accidents and infrastructure failures. The incident has caused significant inconvenience to passengers and has disrupted the movement of goods and services. The SCR is working diligently to restore normalcy and ensure the safety of passengers and train operations. The investigation into the cause of the derailment is ongoing and will determine the steps needed to prevent such incidents in the future.
