  • Survey reveals burning eyes, runny nose, and breathing issues common.
  • 15% residents plan to leave Delhi due to worsening air quality.

The alarming reality of Delhi's air pollution has been starkly revealed in a recent survey, which found that a staggering 69% of families in the national capital have at least one member suffering from pollution-related illnesses. The survey, conducted by Local Circles, a digital platform, involved over 21,000 respondents across the Delhi-NCR region, providing a comprehensive snapshot of the city's air quality crisis and its impact on residents' health. The findings paint a grim picture of the pervasive nature of air pollution in Delhi, highlighting the urgent need for comprehensive solutions to address this growing public health concern.

The survey results demonstrate the multifaceted nature of air pollution's impact on health. A significant 62% of families reported at least one member experiencing burning eyes, while 46% reported someone suffering from a runny nose or congestion. The severity of the situation is further underscored by the fact that 31% of respondents said they face breathing difficulties or asthma, while another 31% mentioned experiencing headaches. The psychological toll of air pollution is also evident, with nearly 23% reporting feelings of anxiety or difficulty concentrating and 15% expressing sleep disturbances. These findings highlight the far-reaching consequences of air pollution, affecting not only physical health but also mental well-being and daily functioning.

As Delhi grapples with the looming winter season, which is traditionally associated with a surge in air pollution levels, the survey revealed that 15% of respondents are planning to leave the city for part of this period to escape the hazardous air quality. While some residents are opting to stay, they are taking preventive measures, with 15% expressing their intention to continue going out while wearing face masks and 23% planning to rely on air purifiers. However, a significant portion of the population remains unprepared, accepting the pollution with minimal intervention. The survey results emphasize the need for a multi-pronged approach to tackle the issue, involving both individual actions and comprehensive policy measures to mitigate the detrimental effects of air pollution on the health and well-being of Delhi residents.
