CRPF Intel Prevented Terrorist Attack on Srinagar Market
  • CRPF intel alerted security forces of a potential attack on Sunday market in Srinagar.
  • Terrorists attempted grenade attack, injuring 12 civilians, but missed intended target.
  • Authorities investigating incident, pursuing perpetrators under UAPA and Explosives Substances Act.

A timely intelligence input provided by the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) successfully prevented a planned terrorist attack on the bustling Sunday Market in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir. The input, received on October 26th, warned of an imminent attack on security personnel and identified key locations, including the Sunday Market, Dal Lake, Lal Chowk, and various parks in Srinagar, as potential targets. Acting on this information, the CRPF immediately restricted the movement of its personnel, advising them to avoid these locations. The directive included refraining from casual activities like strolling along Dal Lake Road, cycling outside the camp, and shopping at the designated areas.

Despite the proactive measures taken, on November 3rd, terrorists attempted to carry out a grenade attack near the Tourist Reception Centre (TRC), a popular spot for the Sunday Market. While the attack was ultimately unsuccessful, the explosion still resulted in injuries to 12 innocent civilians, one of whom, a woman, sustained serious injuries. The intended target, security personnel, was fortunately missed due to the CRPF's alert and the immediate response of security forces.

Following the incident, authorities have registered a case under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) and the Explosives Substances Act. The Srinagar Police, in a statement on Twitter, confirmed the details of the attack, the casualties, and the ongoing investigation. The injured have been identified and are receiving medical attention. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, in a statement on X, condemned the attack and expressed concern for the safety of civilians, calling for an end to the recent surge of violence in the valley.

The attempted attack on the Sunday market highlights the ongoing security challenges faced by the Indian state in Jammu and Kashmir. The quick action taken by the CRPF, based on credible intelligence, undoubtedly prevented significant casualties among security personnel. The incident underscores the importance of effective intelligence gathering and proactive measures in combating terrorism. As authorities continue their investigation and pursue the perpetrators, it remains crucial to prioritize public safety and ensure that such incidents are minimized to safeguard the lives of innocent civilians.
