CPI Opposes Kerala Seaplane Project
  • CPI opposes Kerala's seaplane project.
  • Fishermen's livelihoods are at stake.
  • Seaplane's inaugural flight caused disruption.

The Communist Party of India (CPI) has voiced its strong opposition to the recent launch of Kerala's first seaplane, an amphibious aircraft capable of operating on both land and water. The party has declared that the aircraft will not be permitted to land in any of the state's backwaters, citing concerns over the impact on fishermen's livelihoods and disruptions caused during the inaugural flight.

Alappuzha CPI district secretary PJ Angelos has warned of intensified protests, emphasizing that the livelihoods of fishermen are paramount and cannot be compromised by the introduction of seaplane services. Angelos highlighted the disruption experienced during the seaplane's inaugural flight, where passengers were reportedly held captive for several hours due to operational constraints. The CPI maintains that while the aircraft is permitted to land on airstrips, any attempt to utilize waterdromes in Kerala's backwaters will be met with strong resistance.

The Fishermen Coordination Committee is scheduled to convene on November 20 to discuss further action regarding the seaplane project. This move by the CPI reflects a broader concern about the potential ecological and economic impacts of such initiatives on coastal communities, particularly those reliant on traditional fishing practices. The party's stance highlights the ongoing tension between economic development and environmental protection in Kerala's delicate ecosystem.
