The Indian National Congress (INC), a major political party in India, has taken a decisive step towards restructuring its unit in Himachal Pradesh. On Wednesday, November 6, 2024, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge announced the dissolution of the entire Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) unit in the state, including all district and block units, with immediate effect. This decision comes amidst ongoing factionalism within the party and follows the Congress's recent victory in the state assembly elections. The move is seen as a strategic maneuver to consolidate power and prepare for the upcoming general elections.

The dissolution of the entire state unit signifies a significant shift in the party's approach to Himachal Pradesh. The decision to dissolve the PCC, district, and block units underlines the party's determination to address internal conflicts and promote unity within its ranks. The Congress, despite winning the recent assembly elections, has faced challenges with factionalism within its ranks. These divisions were evident during the Rajya Sabha election in February, where ruling Congress nominee Abhishek Singhvi lost to BJP's Harsh Mahajan due to defections and cross-voting by some Congress MLAs.

Pratibha Singh, the outgoing president of the Himachal Pradesh Congress, has been elevated to the Congress Working Committee (CWC), the highest decision-making body of the party. Singh, who is the wife of former chief minister Virbhadra Singh, had been appointed state Congress chief in April 2022. Her elevation to the CWC reflects her significance within the party and her commitment to the Congress cause. The dissolution of the PCC unit opens up opportunities for new leadership and fresh perspectives within the party in Himachal Pradesh.

The Congress is now actively seeking a new party chief for the state. Several names are being considered, including those of ministers Anirudh Singh and Harshvardhan Chauhan. The selection process is expected to be conducted with due diligence to ensure that the new party chief is capable of leading the Congress to victory in the upcoming general elections. The appointment of a new leader will be crucial for the party's success in Himachal Pradesh and its ability to maintain its strong presence in the state.
