The gruesome murder of a 16-year-old girl, who worked as a domestic help in Chennai, has sent shockwaves through the city. Six individuals, including two couples, have been apprehended by the Chennai City Police for their alleged involvement in the horrific crime. The victim, who hailed from Thanjavur, was reportedly physically tortured to death by the residents of the house where she was employed, leading to her tragic demise on the day of Deepavali.
The victim's tragic fate unfolded in a rented apartment in Aminjikarai. Her mother, unable to care for her after the passing of her father, had entrusted the girl to two individuals who brought her to Chennai for employment. The girl had been working as a caretaker for a four-year-old child of a businessman named Mohammed Nishad since December 2023. However, her life took a sinister turn when she became the target of sustained cruelty by the inmates of the house, culminating in her brutal death.
According to police investigations, the girl's tormentors included Mohammed Nishad, his wife Nivetha alias Nasiya, their friends Lokesh and his wife Jayashakthi, Nishad's sister Seema Begam, and a domestic help employed by Lokesh. The police allege that they subjected the young girl to physical torture for three months, claiming she was unable to perform domestic chores effectively. The brutal assault on Deepavali day ultimately proved fatal, leading to the girl's death. After leaving her lifeless body in the bathroom, the perpetrators fled the house, locking it behind them.
One of the suspects subsequently informed a lawyer, who in turn alerted the house owner, Sarbuddin, and the police. Following a lengthy interrogation, the Aminjikarai Police arrested the six individuals on charges of murder. The suspects, including the two couples, Nishad's sister, and Lokesh's domestic help, were remanded to judicial custody, awaiting further legal proceedings.
The case has sparked widespread outrage and condemnation, highlighting the urgent need for stricter laws and greater social awareness to combat domestic violence and exploitation, particularly against vulnerable individuals like domestic workers.
