  • Army officer killed in action during encounter with terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir
  • Naib Subedar Rakesh Kumar from 2 Para (SF) was killed in the encounter
  • Three soldiers injured during the counter-terror operation in Kishtwar's Bhart Ridge

The tragic incident unfolded in the mountainous terrain of Jammu and Kashmir, where the Indian Army is actively engaged in counter-terror operations to maintain peace and security. On Saturday, a fierce gunfight erupted between security forces and terrorists in the Bhart Ridge area of Kishtwar district, resulting in the death of an Army officer, Naib Subedar Rakesh Kumar, and injuries to three other soldiers. The loss of Naib Subedar Kumar, a valiant soldier from the elite 2 Para (SF), is a stark reminder of the sacrifices made by our armed forces in the line of duty.

The encounter, which took place around 11 am, was part of a joint counter-terror operation launched by the Indian Army and the Jammu and Kashmir Police. According to reports, the security forces intercepted a group of terrorists in a forested area, just a few kilometers from where the bullet-riddled bodies of two village defence guards (VDGs), Nazir Ahmad and Kuldeep Kumar, were discovered earlier this week. The terrorists had kidnapped and killed the VDGs on Thursday evening, prompting a massive search operation in the forests of Kuntwara and Keshwan.

The incident has heightened security concerns in the region, particularly given the recent rise in terrorist activities. The intensified hunt for the perpetrators of the VDGs' killing led to the encounter where Naib Subedar Kumar lost his life. The Indian Army's 16 Corps, in a post on X, confirmed the tragic news and expressed condolences to the bereaved family. The operation continues as security forces strive to neutralize the terrorists responsible for the heinous act and restore peace in the region. The sacrifice of Naib Subedar Rakesh Kumar will not be forgotten, and his valor will inspire future generations of soldiers.
