  • Army officer killed in action in J&K
  • Three soldiers injured in encounter with terrorists
  • Operation launched after VDGs were killed

A tragic incident unfolded in Jammu and Kashmir, leaving one army officer dead and three soldiers wounded. The encounter took place on Saturday, July 15, 2023, in the Kishtwar district of the region. Naib Subedar Rakesh Kumar, a Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) belonging to the 2 Para (SF), was killed in action during a joint counter-terrorist operation launched in the Bhart Ridge area. The operation, a joint effort between the Indian Army and the local police, was a response to the recent killing of two village defence guards (VDGs), Nazir Ahmad and Kuldeep Kumar. Their bullet-riddled bodies were found in the area earlier in the week, leading to an intensified search for the perpetrators.

The encounter began around 11 am, when the search parties encountered the terrorists in a forested region. The terrorists were believed to be hiding in the area, having recently kidnapped and killed the VDGs. The search operation, which commenced on Thursday evening, spanned the forests of Kuntwara and Keshwan. The discovery of the VDGs' bodies spurred the authorities into action, prompting the launch of the counter-terrorist operation aimed at apprehending those responsible. The incident serves as a grim reminder of the ongoing security challenges faced in Jammu and Kashmir, where terrorist activity continues to pose a threat to peace and security.
