Zeeshan Siddique, son of the late Congress leader Baba Siddique, has joined the Ajit Pawar faction of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), marking a significant shift in Maharashtra's political landscape. The move comes just days after his father's murder outside Zeeshan's office in Bandra on October 12th, adding a layer of tragedy to the already politically charged situation. Siddique's switch to the NCP isn't a surprise, as he had previously faced suspension from Congress due to cross-voting in recent legislative council elections. This move was further fueled by his public accusations of body shaming by Rahul Gandhi's team.
Earlier this year, Zeeshan had made startling claims about the challenges he faced while attempting to meet Rahul Gandhi. He alleged that individuals close to Rahul Gandhi demanded he lose 10 kilograms before being granted a meeting during the 'Bharat Jodo Yatra' in Nanded, Maharashtra. This incident, coupled with his subsequent criticism of Congress's alleged mistreatment of minority leaders and workers, led to his removal from the party. Siddique accused Congress of harboring communalism and discrimination, questioning whether being a Muslim within the party was a sin. His outspoken criticism and alleged mistreatment, along with the tragic loss of his father, have undoubtedly influenced his decision to switch his allegiance to the NCP.
Now, as he joins the NCP, Zeeshan has vowed to continue his father's legacy and has expressed confidence in his party's victory in the upcoming Maharashtra assembly elections. The NCP has officially declared him as their candidate for the Bandra East constituency. Notably, Zeeshan had won the same seat on a Congress ticket during the 2019 state elections. His father, a veteran Congress leader, had also crossed over to the NCP earlier this year. This move further strengthens the ruling Mahayuti coalition, adding a prominent political figure to their ranks. Zeeshan's decision to join the NCP, driven by his personal grievances and the political climate in Maharashtra, will have significant ramifications for the state's upcoming elections.
