Zee Drops Plea After 'Emergency' Cuts
  • Zee Entertainment dropped its plea
  • CBFC suggested cuts to 'Emergency'
  • Film to be released after edits

The Bombay High Court has resolved the legal dispute surrounding the release of Kangana Ranaut's film 'Emergency', with Zee Entertainment Enterprises, a co-producer of the film, withdrawing its petition against the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). The petition alleged that the CBFC was unfairly withholding certification for the film. The court's decision came after Zee Entertainment agreed to implement changes suggested by the CBFC's revising committee.

The producers agreed to make the required cuts and resubmit the film to the CBFC for certification. The CBFC has committed to reviewing the film and issuing a certificate within two weeks of receiving the revised version. The court emphasized that its decision was based on the agreement reached between the parties and did not constitute a judgment on the merits of the case.

The CBFC's revising committee had recommended several changes, including the removal of certain words and phrases, the deletion of specific dialogues, and the modification of scenes depicting Sikh characters. The changes were primarily made to address concerns raised by Sikh groups about the portrayal of their community in the film's trailer. These concerns centered around the portrayal of political violence and unrest, as well as references to atrocities against women.

The CBFC's decision to grant the film a UA (Universal Audience) certificate subject to modifications reflects the board's responsibility to balance freedom of expression with the need to avoid potential harm or offense. The film's release, now pending the completion of the required revisions, is eagerly anticipated by audiences interested in the historical drama portraying the life and times of former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, played by Kangana Ranaut. This case highlights the complexities of film censorship and the delicate balance between artistic freedom and public sensitivities.
