In her debut election, she secured a victory in the Julana assembly seat in Haryana, defeating BJP candidate Yogesh Bairagi. The 2024 year has been a roller coaster ride for Phogat. She faced disappointment at the Olympics, missing out on the final due to exceeding the weight limit. Phogat's victory reverberates through the Indian wrestling community, which has been grappling with its own set of challenges. A wave of protests against sexual harassment within the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) had rocked the sport in January 2023. Top wrestlers, including Phogat, Sakshi Malik, and Bajrang Punia, demanded the resignation of the former WFI chief and BJP MP, Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. This period of turmoil saw a decline in the number of young women participating in wrestling, highlighting the need for urgent reforms and a supportive environment within the sport.
With her political victory, Phogat's entry into the Haryana government offers a glimmer of hope for the wrestling community. Many wrestlers, especially those contemplating leaving the sport due to the recent controversies, are placing their faith in Phogat's ability to advocate for their interests. Her potential role as the state's sports minister could provide a much-needed voice and support for the development of wrestling in Haryana.
