Waqf Bill Meeting Disrupted by Brawl
  • Opposition MPs walked out of Waqf bill meeting
  • Brawl erupted over inclusion of women in Waqf boards
  • BJP and Opposition MPs traded accusations

The Indian Parliament witnessed another heated exchange between ruling party MPs and the Opposition during a meeting of the parliamentary committee examining the Waqf (Amendment) Bill. The meeting, marred by verbal sparring and accusations, ultimately led to the Opposition members walking out for the second consecutive day. The conflict arose from a heated debate over the inclusion of women in Waqf boards, a key provision of the proposed amendment.

The crux of the dispute stemmed from differing viewpoints on the role of women in Waqf administration. The BJP MPs, supporting the inclusion of women, argued for greater representation and participation in the management of Waqf properties. However, the Opposition, including the Congress and Trinamool Congress, raised concerns about the potential for manipulation and argued that the bill should focus on broader reforms to improve the functioning of Waqf boards. The heated exchanges, punctuated by strong language and accusations of disrespect, escalated the tension within the committee.

The Opposition alleged that BJP MPs used offensive language and that the committee's chairperson, Jagdambika Pal, failed to maintain order and take action against the alleged misconduct. In response, the BJP MPs countered by accusing the Opposition members of disrespecting the chairperson and disrupting the proceedings. This clash of accusations further fueled the controversy, leading to a standstill in the committee's deliberations. Amidst this heated atmosphere, the Opposition MPs decided to walk out, citing their dissatisfaction with the conduct of the meeting and the chairperson's inability to address their concerns.
