Umar Khalid Bail Plea Adjourned, Remains in Jail
  • Umar Khalid's bail plea adjourned
  • Hearing scheduled for November 26th
  • He remains in jail for riots case

Umar Khalid, a former JNU student leader and key figure in the 2020 North East Delhi riots, will continue his imprisonment until at least November. The Delhi High Court has adjourned his bail plea until the 26th of next month, leaving him in custody. This decision follows a similar postponement of the bail pleas of Sharjeel Imam and other individuals implicated in the same case.

The hearing was initially scheduled for a division bench comprising Justices Navin Chawla and Shalinder Kaur. However, due to unforeseen circumstances, the court could not assemble, necessitating the delay. Previously, the matter had been under the purview of Justice Suresh Kumar Kait, who has since been transferred as the Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court.

The original schedule for the final hearing on the bail pleas of Umar Khalid, Abdul Khalid Saifi, Gulfisha Fatima, Sharjeel Imam, Shadab Ahmed, and other accused individuals was set for October 7th. This followed a notice issued by the High Court to the Delhi Police concerning Umar Khalid's bail plea. The pleas of other accused remain pending before the court.

Umar Khalid's arrest by the Delhi Police in September 2020 stemmed from an Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) case connected to the riots. Throughout the past four years, the Delhi police have filed numerous charge sheets and supplementary charge sheets as part of the ongoing investigation. In May 2023, the Karkardooma Court refused to grant regular bail to Umar Khalid. The trial court's reasoning for denying bail cited a previous Delhi High Court order that deemed the allegations against the accused credible and deemed him ineligible for bail.
