  • Six coaches of the passenger train derailed, and two caught fire.
  • At least 10 passengers were injured and taken to a hospital.

A collision between a passenger train and a stationary goods train in Tamil Nadu's Thiruvallur district on Friday evening resulted in the derailment of six coaches and the injury of at least 10 passengers. The incident occurred near Kavaraipettai, close to Chennai, around 8:30 pm. Two of the derailed coaches caught fire, adding to the chaos and severity of the accident. The injured passengers were promptly transported to a nearby hospital for medical attention.

Initial reports suggest that the 12578 Mysore-Darbhanga Bagmati Express, en route from Mysore to Darbhanga, experienced a sudden jerk before entering a loop line. This unexpected movement caused the train to collide with a goods train that was stationed on the loop line. The force of the impact derailed several coaches of the passenger train, and the fire outbreak likely stemmed from fuel leaks or electrical malfunctions caused by the collision.

Emergency response teams, including national and state disaster response forces (NDRF and SDRF), along with ambulances, were swiftly dispatched to the accident site. Rescue operations were immediately initiated to assist the injured passengers, and the focus shifted to mitigating the fire and ensuring the safety of those involved. The extent of the damage to the trains and the infrastructure surrounding the accident site is being assessed by railway officials.
