Tamil Nadu Battered by Heavy Rains, Chennai Flooded
  • Heavy rain pummels Tamil Nadu.
  • Chennai faces severe waterlogging.
  • State government provides relief.

The state of Tamil Nadu in India is currently grappling with the aftermath of heavy rainfall that has caused widespread disruption and flooding. The relentless downpour, which began on Thursday, has brought life to a standstill in several areas, particularly in the capital city of Chennai.

Chennai has been particularly hard hit, with several areas experiencing severe waterlogging. The rainfall has led to overflowing drains and inundated roads, making transportation a major challenge for residents. The neighborhoods of Kathivakkam and Manali recorded 23 cm and 21 cm of rainfall respectively, while Cholavaram saw an astounding 30 cm of rainfall. Red Hills and Avadi also experienced heavy rainfall, registering 28 cm and 25 cm respectively.

The downpour is attributed to a depression that formed over the Bay of Bengal and moved towards the Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh coasts. The depression crossed the coast between Puducherry and Nellore early Thursday morning, bringing with it heavy rains and strong winds. The Tamil Nadu government has been working tirelessly to mitigate the impact of the rains and provide relief to those affected.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has personally visited rain-affected areas in Chennai and distributed relief materials. The government has also implemented precautionary measures across the state to prepare for any eventuality. DMK leader TKS Elangovan highlighted the government's efforts in addressing the flooding, pointing out that the water receded quickly due to steps taken in recent years. He compared the situation to past incidents of flooding during the tenure of former Chief Minister Jayalalitha, emphasizing the progress made by the current government in infrastructure improvements.

While the rainfall has brought challenges and disruption, the government's proactive measures and swift response have helped minimize the impact. The focus remains on providing immediate relief and assistance to those affected by the floods, and the government is working to restore normalcy as quickly as possible.
