Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin's eyebrow-raising 'solution' to this issue has only added fuel to the fire. During a state-funded Hindu marriage ceremony, Stalin, referencing the traditional Tamil blessing for 16 kinds of wealth, jokingly suggested that couples should have 16 children, implying a need to increase their state's population to maintain their representation in the Lok Sabha.
This comment, though seemingly lighthearted, has been interpreted as a pointed critique of the proposed delimitation process, which would significantly benefit states like Uttar Pradesh, with a substantially larger population, while potentially reducing representation for states that have effectively controlled their growth. The southern states, particularly Tamil Nadu, have consistently expressed concerns about this potential disparity, arguing that their efforts in managing population should not be penalized. In February, Tamil Nadu's ruling DMK party adopted a resolution opposing the delimitation plan, claiming that states that have effectively managed their population should not be disadvantaged.
The debate surrounding the delimitation exercise is rooted in the complex relationship between population size, political representation, and resource allocation. While states like Uttar Pradesh stand to gain significantly from the proposed changes, with their Lok Sabha seats potentially increasing by almost 60%, southern states like Kerala, known for their comparatively low population growth, could lose seats.
