Sonam Wangchuk, a prominent environmentalist and social activist, has embarked on an indefinite fast in Delhi, aiming to pressure the Central Government to address key demands pertaining to Ladakh. The decision comes after the government has yet to engage in any meaningful dialogue regarding these issues, which were highlighted during Wangchuk's 'Dilli Chalo Padyatra' – a foot march from Ladakh to Delhi that culminated in his detention by Delhi Police.
Wangchuk's padyatra, which commenced on September 1st in Leh, was organized to bring attention to a four-point agenda. Central to these demands is the pursuit of 6th Schedule status for Ladakh, which is currently a Union Territory without a legislature. The agenda also emphasizes addressing environmental concerns, a matter of great importance to Wangchuk who is known for his innovative work in promoting sustainable solutions in the region.
The padyatra concluded with Wangchuk and 150 fellow activists being detained at the Delhi-Haryana border on Monday. Despite their release on October 2nd, Wangchuk was restricted from meeting with media personnel, highlighting the constraints imposed on him. The decision to go on an indefinite fast underscores the urgency and seriousness with which Wangchuk views the lack of response from the government. He remains committed to staying in Delhi until meaningful discussions on Ladakh's demands are initiated by the Home Ministry, a critical aspect of his ongoing campaign.
Wangchuk's protest highlights the frustration felt by many in Ladakh who feel their concerns are not being adequately addressed. The fast serves as a powerful symbol of his commitment to advocating for the region, and it remains to be seen how the Central Government will respond to this escalation of pressure.
