The 2024 Women's T20 World Cup, scheduled to commence on October 3rd in the UAE, marks a significant step forward in cricket technology as it will be the first ICC event to implement the Smart Replay System. This advanced technology, previously utilized in the Hundred and IPL 2024, promises to enhance decision-making accuracy and provide viewers with a more comprehensive and engaging viewing experience. The system will be deployed at every game, employing a minimum of 28 cameras for comprehensive coverage. This will be augmented by a range of analytical and visual enhancements, including the Decision Review System (DRS), further solidifying its role in delivering impartial and accurate rulings.

The Smart Replay System leverages the capabilities of Hawk-Eye's eight high-speed cameras, providing the TV umpire with synchronized multi-angle footage directly from two Hawk-Eye operators situated in the same room. This direct access to footage eliminates the need for the TV broadcast director to act as a conduit, streamlining the review process. Moreover, the TV umpire can now access a wider range of visual data, including split-screen images, enabling them to make more informed decisions. This enhanced access to visual information is particularly beneficial for stumping referrals, allowing the umpire to request split-screen visuals to determine if a clear gap exists between the ball and the bat. This system, in turn, eliminates the need for an UltraEdge review unless a clear gap is not visible, further streamlining the process.

For stumping decisions, the Smart Replay System will provide the TV umpire with a tri-vision display. This display seamlessly combines side-on camera footage with front-on camera footage, presenting a comprehensive picture of the action. The front-on camera angle is crucial for accurately assessing the removal of the bails. Previously, broadcasters relied on side-on angles from both sides, supplemented by Stump Cam footage. However, Stump Cam operates at a lower speed of approximately 50 frames per second, whereas the Hawk-Eye cameras record at 300 frames per second. This higher frame rate ensures more precise and accurate footage for umpires, contributing to more reliable and informed decisions.
