Shami Targets Domestic Games to Prove Fitness for Australia
  • Shami is pain-free and aims to play domestic matches
  • He's focused on regaining fitness for Australia tour
  • He wants to be ready to play 20-30 overs in a match

Mohammed Shami, the Indian fast bowler, is aiming to prove his match fitness for the upcoming tour of Australia by playing in one or two domestic matches. Shami has been sidelined with a left Achilles heel injury since the 2023 ODI World Cup, and while he has been recovering, he suffered a setback with a swollen knee, delaying his return to the national team.

Despite these setbacks, Shami insists that he is now “100%” pain-free and is focusing on regaining his strength and endurance before the tour. He acknowledges the importance of being fully prepared for the challenging Test series against Australia and wants to ensure that he can bowl a full quota of 20-30 overs in a match. He is looking to play in domestic games to assess his fitness and fine-tune his bowling before heading to Australia.

India's captain Rohit Sharma had previously expressed concerns about taking an “undercooked” Shami to Australia, emphasizing the need for the fast bowler to be fully fit before joining the team. This has led to Shami’s determination to prove his readiness and ensure that he can contribute significantly to the Indian team's success in the upcoming Test series. The first Test against Australia is scheduled to begin on November 22nd in Perth, giving Shami a month to regain full fitness and demonstrate his ability to perform at the highest level.
