RG Kar Case: CBI Uses CCTV, Call Records to Detail Events
  • CBI details Sanjay Roy's movements at RG Kar Hospital
  • CCTV footage shows Roy's presence at crime scene
  • Victim's movements before the crime are also detailed

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has submitted a detailed chargesheet in the case of the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, outlining the movements of both the main accused, Sanjay Roy, and the victim in the hours leading up to the crime. The chargesheet, filed against Roy, who was arrested on August 10, 2023, a day after the doctor's body was found, provides a timeline based on CCTV footage and call data records (CDR).

According to the chargesheet, Roy was seen entering the hospital premises at 3:42 am on August 9. He parked his bike near the main gate and then proceeded to the emergency ward ramp, entering the building at 3:48 am. CCTV footage further revealed his presence on the third-floor corridor near the crime scene at 4:03 am, followed by his exit from the chest ward on the same floor at 4:32 am. Finally, Roy left the hospital premises on his bike at 4:37 am.

The chargesheet also sheds light on the victim's activities before the crime. Sources indicate that the trainee doctor was in a seminar hall with four colleagues on the night of August 8-9. The group had ordered food from a delivery service, and a fellow doctor last saw the victim around 3 am. The postmortem report determined the victim's time of death to be after 4 am.

The chargesheet reveals that Roy sustained injuries during the incident, including abrasions on his left cheek, hand, and thigh. The Kolkata Police recovered nine articles from Roy, including his clothes and helmet. The CBI conducted polygraph tests on at least 10 witnesses and recorded statements from over 45 individuals. The victim's body displayed seven injuries, including ligature marks on her neck. Her death was attributed to manual strangulation associated with smothering.

The investigation has also implicated two other individuals - Abhijit Mondal, the in-charge officer of Tala police station, and Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar. Ghosh is also facing separate charges of corruption. The CBI's remand note suggests a potential conspiracy, stating the need to verify phone call records to explore possible collusion between the main accused and co-accused.

The CBI, in its chargesheet, concluded that Roy committed the crime on August 9 while the victim was sleeping in the seminar room during a break. However, the chargesheet did not include a charge of gang rape, implying that Roy acted alone. This conclusion was reached after a thorough investigation, including detailed interrogation and a polygraph test of the main accused. Roy, however, refused to consent to a narco analysis.
