The political landscape in Kerala has been stirred by a controversy surrounding remarks made by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan in an interview published in an English daily. These remarks, concerning gold smuggling and hawala money in the district of Malappuram, have sparked outrage and demands for clarification from the opposition United Democratic Front (UDF).
The UDF, led by VD Satheesan, has accused the Chief Minister of propagating a political narrative fueled by the Sangh Parivar, alleging that the controversial statements were inserted into the interview with his knowledge. Satheesan has also questioned Vijayan's relationship with two individuals reportedly present during the interview, adding further fuel to the fire.
IUML national general secretary P K Kunhalikutty has echoed these concerns, stating that the remarks were not accidental and demanding that Vijayan clarify the matter. Kunhalikutty expressed his apprehension over a potential campaign against Malappuram at a national level, suggesting that these remarks could be interpreted as promoting anti-national activities. He emphasized that the insertion of such statements by a PR agency, even if attributed to a mistake, raises serious concerns about the nature and intent behind the actions.
Kunhalikutty has further highlighted the increase in criminal cases registered by police in the district, suggesting that the controversial remarks might be part of a conspiracy to portray Malappuram as a crime hub. He voiced his concern over the potential misuse of these statements by communal forces.
The UDF's stance on the recent actions of Nilambur MLA PV Anvar, who has broken ranks with the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF), remains unclear. Kunhalikutty has indicated that a decision on this matter will be reached after discussions within the front.
