Omar Abdullah, a prominent figure in Jammu and Kashmir politics, has once again assumed the role of Chief Minister, marking a significant moment in the state's political landscape. His return after a decade comes as a result of the National Conference-Congress alliance's victory in the recent assembly polls, securing 48 out of 90 seats. This triumph makes Abdullah the first leader to take charge after the contentious revocation of Article 370, which granted special status to Jammu and Kashmir, in 2019.
Born into a family with a rich political legacy, Abdullah inherited a significant political mantle. His grandfather, Sheikh Abdullah, and father, Farooq Abdullah, both served as Chief Ministers of Jammu and Kashmir. Following his education at prestigious institutions like Burn Hall School in Srinagar and Lawrence School in Sanawar, he pursued a Bachelor of Commerce degree at Sydenham College in Mumbai. Prior to entering the political arena, Abdullah worked with ITC Limited and The Oberoi Group, gaining experience in the corporate world.
Abdullah's political career began in 1998 when, at the age of 28, he became the youngest member of Parliament after his successful debut in the Lok Sabha election. He served on committees focused on transport and tourism and was part of the Ministry of Tourism's Consultative Committee. His political journey continued with re-election to the 13th Lok Sabha in 1999, where he was appointed Union Minister of State for Commerce and Industry. Further solidifying his position, he became the youngest Union Minister of State for External Affairs in Atal Bihari Vajpayee's NDA government in 2001.
Despite facing a setback in the 2002 state assembly elections, where he lost his seat in Ganderbal, Abdullah remained politically active. In 2006, he took a bold step by meeting with Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf to discuss the Jammu and Kashmir issue, becoming only the second member of his family to visit Pakistan. This move highlighted his commitment to resolving the complex issues surrounding the region.
In 2009, Abdullah was sworn in as the 11th Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, leading a coalition government with the Congress party. At the age of 38, he became the youngest Chief Minister of the state. His tenure was marked by various initiatives and challenges, including addressing development, security, and socio-economic issues. After losing the 2014 assembly elections, he continued to be an active voice in politics, serving as a vocal critic of the BJP-led government's policies regarding Jammu and Kashmir.
