The National Conference (NC) has elected Omar Abdullah as its leader, paving the way for the formation of a new government in Jammu and Kashmir. This follows the recent assembly elections where the NC, in an alliance with the Congress, emerged as the largest coalition partner, securing a total of 46 seats in the 90-member assembly. Omar Abdullah, the son of former Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah, expressed gratitude to the elected representatives and announced that negotiations are ongoing to receive a letter of support from the Congress, signifying their commitment to the coalition.

Adding to the NC's strength, four independent MLAs have pledged their support, strengthening their position in the assembly. The NC leader has confirmed that once the letter of support is received from the Congress, the coalition will formally approach the Raj Bhavan, the governor's residence, to stake their claim to form the government. The Congress, despite winning only six seats in the elections, has played a significant role in this coalition formation. Their newly appointed Jammu and Kashmir chief, Tariq Karra, met with the NC leadership and is scheduled to meet with the Congress leadership in Srinagar on Friday to finalize details of the coalition and its ministerial positions.

Farooq Abdullah, the NC president, expressed his party's commitment to addressing the issues faced by the people of Jammu and Kashmir, hoping for the support of the central government in their endeavors. He highlighted the strategic importance of the state, stating that it shares borders with nuclear-powered nations like Pakistan and China. While acknowledging the challenges, he reiterated the party's dedication to the restoration of statehood, a significant political issue in the region, although he recognized that the process would require time. The NC and Congress, in a united front, are now poised to form a new government in Jammu and Kashmir, marking a significant shift in the state's political landscape.
