The recent divorce of Telugu cinema stars Naga Chaitanya and Samantha Ruth Prabhu has taken an unexpected turn, spiraling into a political controversy in Telangana. At the center of this storm is a defamation complaint filed by veteran actor Nagarjuna Akkineni, father of Naga Chaitanya, against Telangana Environment Minister Konda Surekha. The catalyst for this legal action was Surekha's explosive accusations against K.T. Rama Rao (KTR), the state's IT minister, alleging his involvement in orchestrating the divorce.
In a fiery speech delivered on Wednesday, Surekha, a Congress leader, claimed that KTR, who is also the son of Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao, was responsible for the breakdown of Naga Chaitanya and Samantha's marriage. She alleged that KTR had lured Samantha into drug addiction and subsequently blackmailed her, ultimately leading to their separation. He stressed that Surekha's statements were “deliberately spread… with the sole intention of damaging the complainant's personal, professional, and familial reputation…” Nagarjuna further stated that Surekha's comments were made with “malicious intent of conveying falsehoods to the public at large, intending to cause harm to the complainant and his family reputation for political gain and sensationalism…”
The controversy has also prompted legal action from KTR himself. He issued a defamation notice to Konda Surekha, accusing her of engaging in “disgusting and nauseating politics” and demanding action from her party senior, Rahul Gandhi. The spat has drawn condemnation from both the film industry and the public, with many criticizing Surekha's blatant attempt to exploit a personal matter for political gain.
Both Samantha and Naga Chaitanya responded to the politician's remarks with strong statements, refuting the allegations and condemning the use of their private lives for political maneuvering. Chaitanya described the divorce as a “painful and unfortunate life decision” made by mutual consent, highlighting the need for respect and dignity in the process. He further denounced Surekha's claims as “baseless and completely ridiculous,” emphasizing the exploitation of celebrities' personal lives for sensationalized headlines. Samantha also expressed her displeasure, requesting that her name be kept out of political battles, reiterating the personal nature of her divorce and her desire to remain apolitical.
