The Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance, comprising the Congress, the NCP (Sharad Pawar faction), and the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT), has reached a consensus on contesting 85 seats each in the upcoming Maharashtra assembly elections. This announcement, confirmed by Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut, signifies a crucial step in the political landscape leading up to the polls.
Raut emphasized the importance of the MVA's unity, stating that it should come before the people. He also expressed the desire for the elections to be held without any hindrance. The alliance's seat-sharing agreement, though initially reported incorrectly on social media, has been rectified and finalized. The remaining assembly constituencies will be distributed among the constituent parties by the evening, ensuring that smaller parties are also accommodated.
The MVA's commitment to unity underscores their strategy for the upcoming elections. This united front, which includes the Shiv Sena (UBT), Congress, and NCP, aims to present a formidable challenge to the ruling Mahayuti alliance consisting of the BJP, the Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde faction), and the Ajit Pawar-led NCP. The Shiv Sena (UBT) has already released a list of 65 candidates for the elections. This list includes prominent figures such as Aaditya Thackeray, who will contest from the Worli assembly constituency. The nomination process has begun, marking the official commencement of the electoral campaign. The Maharashtra assembly elections, scheduled for November 20, will see 288 seats contested. The results will be declared on November 23.
The upcoming elections are being closely watched, given the recent political developments in the state. The 2019 assembly elections saw the BJP emerge as the largest party with 105 seats, followed by the Shiv Sena with 56, and the Congress with 44.
