Mumbai Metro Line-3 Inaugurated, Realizing a 100-Year Vision
  • Mumbai Metro Line-3 opens, fulfilling a century-old dream.
  • The 12.69 km section connects BKC to Aarey Colony.
  • Line-3 is part of a larger plan for a massive metro network.

The launch of Mumbai Metro Line-3, dubbed the 'Mumbai Underground', marks a historic moment for the city and a testament to the enduring vision of Dr Prabhakar Ganesh Patankar, a pioneer of urban mobility in India. The 12.69-kilometer stretch, operational since October 5th, 2024, connects Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) to Aarey Colony via the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Road (JVLR), finally realizing a dream that had been in the works for over a century. This milestone not only signifies a significant advancement in Mumbai's urban infrastructure but also acknowledges the persistent efforts of individuals like Patankar, whose contributions to the city's transportation system often go unnoticed.

The concept of an underground metro in Mumbai can be traced back to the 1920s when British town planner WR Davidge proposed the idea, but it was Patankar who truly championed the cause. His 1963 report, 'Underground Railway for Bombay-Some Thoughts by PG Patankar', laid out a comprehensive plan for five interconnected underground Metro lines, recognizing the burgeoning population and the strain it was putting on the city's existing transportation system. Patankar's passion for improving Mumbai's mobility remained unwavering throughout his life, leading him to advocate tirelessly for the project and even to personally engage with government officials to secure its approval. Unfortunately, Patankar passed away in 2013 without witnessing the fruition of his vision.

The opening of Line-3 marks the culmination of a long-held ambition for Mumbai. While the line itself is significant, it is part of a much larger plan for a comprehensive metro network that aims to alleviate traffic congestion and improve connectivity within the city. The completion of Line-3 is a major step towards this ambitious goal, and as more sections of the metro system come online, Mumbai will witness a transformative shift in its urban landscape. With a focus on providing fast, comfortable, safe, secure, reliable, and affordable connectivity, the metro system will play a crucial role in shaping Mumbai's future as a thriving metropolis. It will also serve as a symbol of progress and innovation, embodying the city's determination to overcome challenges and embrace a more sustainable and efficient future.
